Midweek In A Very Different Pastor’s Study – July 31, 2013

Much to think about right now. For Wiccans and many others, we’re coming up on Lammas, the time to celebrate the first harvest, thus the name that translates into “loaf-mass”. But also, there is a celebration of a priest who did not get the priesthood he had once hoped for, but did much with the priesthood which he was given. I’m speaking of Father Solanus Casey, who was known, among other things, for sounding some of our country’s most successful soup kitchens, at least one of which is still in operation. He was also known for his advice and insight, and people would line up to speak with him, though he was supposedly the porter (receptionist). But what made him so special was how he would go out of what most people would see as their “comfort zone” to do what he was called to do, including one time which came to eventually involve an ancestor of mine!

Father Solanus Casey – Church Back Home – Special- July 31, 2013

A special celebration today, honoring Father Solanus Casey, a Capuchin priest known for his compassion and wisdom. Judged by his order to be not intellectually strong enough to preach or hear confessions, he founded soup kitchens during some of our worst economic times, worked with some of the most desperate of the poor, and giving advice. All that in addition to some acts before he became a Capuchin, including friendship with a man who had been one of this country’s most famous outlaws. There’s a family connection between Fr Solanus and me, in that he and my great-grandfather had a mutual friend. But then, there is also what Father Solanus did for me. And I think you’ll find something worth seeing in him, too!

Ninth Sunday After Trinity – Church Back Home- July 28, 2013

With today’s Eucharist, a parable that is often told, but perhaps not as often grasped as most folks think. That the younger son blows his fortune and is welcomed back is well known, but what of the father’s commands – a robe, shoes on his feet, and a ring on his hand? If you see what they might mean in the context of those times, you’ll see the extent of the father’s compassion and forgiveness!

Be watching this week! Wednesday, July 31st will be a special!

Midweek In A Very Different Pastor’s Study – July 24, 2013

In the 1980’s classic movie “Revenge Of The Nerds”, the grand finale of the movie was when you saw the number of people who identified themselves as being or having been nerds taking a stand, you saw how the people who thought that they had it all suddenly became a defensive minority. OK, so what do we do? Well, not what we’ve tried and not what others have tried. But, we can come together more often, some of us have done it once already with success, and perhaps more can happen like that!

And here we have one of our greatest challenges. We get warned about false prophets, wolves dressing themselves as sheep, and the like. And we must also know that evil’s false accusations and unjust condemnations are spoken as if they were words of righteousness!

And so, what to do? Begin with sacraments, prayer, and discussion and proceed to knowing your own truth!

The well-publicized trial of George Zimmerman for the death of Tayvon Martin did teach us one thing, and that is the importance of asking the right question. The jury was stuck with answering the questions they were asked to answer, and there were not enough questions to provide a really satisfactory set of answers.

Let’s take a few minutes and examine the need to ask the right questions!

The Gospel reading is a familiar story about feeding the multitudes, a reminder of how faith can make things happen when it’s allowed to work. But the Epistle reading says something special for us in terms of the world we’re living in. When people speak of someone’s spiritual development, they often speak of following a path – and well so. And any path offers the temptation of “side trips.” Let’s look at them and see why staying on the path is important!
